Who Is Clutch?

Clutch performance in sports is the phenomenon of athletes under pressure, usually in the last minute of the game. The ability to summon strength, concentration and whatever else is necessary to succeed to perform well and perhaps change the outcome of the game.

A huge debate has turned the NBA into a frenzy. The million dollar question is “who is clutch?”, this title has set divisions among fans, analysts and reporters alike. Some will argue Jordan, some stand by Kobe, others have their money on Cury but the one player that has caused chaos and earning his stripes LeBron.

Of the bat one will be tempted to say Jordan , but let’s not jump the gun. Due diligence in this particular case is required, we have to let the figures speak for themselves. Analysis will be based on two factors stats on best game performance and worst after which you then get to decide whose clutch.

Jordan

Through his three Game 7s, Jordan averaged 33.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, seven assists, one steal and one block on 45.7 percent shooting.

Take a look

Kobe

The Mamba has posted combined averages of 22.2 points, eight rebounds, five assists, one steal and 1.3 blocks on 38.9 percent shooting. Though he’s not known as the most efficient of performers, that field-goal percentage is regrettable even for him.

Cury

For people that label him as a choker, he actually has really good numbers when a game 7 arrives:

28.7 PPG, 5 REB, 6.3 Assists, 43% FG, 42.4 3P%, 100% FT

LeBron

In Game 7 situations, James averages 34.9 points per game and shoots 48.4 percent from the floor. He averages 8.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists, which means he gets aggressive.

Now here’s the kicker LeBron’s number elevate interns of stats, he has +5 buzzer beaters which is more than all the other 3. The problem is when you hear a narrative based on affirmation you miss the bigger picture, with the given numbers LeBron is historically clutch.

Tennis

Monte Carlo magic lives. With the Stars setting camp chasing after the title of clay court champion Monte Carlo proved to live up to expectations by producing a unique round of 16 which had all the top seeded players. All eyes where set on Nadal who was chasing after an 11th title on the clay soil. With impressive displays it was a Nadal and Nishikori final, experience seemed to be on Nadal’s side as he rushed through his opponent to clinch the title dubbing him the master of Monte Carlo.

Rugby

Sevens: 7’s rugby has set the rugby world flames, stealing the hearts of many at all ages. This short format has lived up to expectations and has also been inducted as an Olympic Sport. The 2018 series has been a slobber knocker with titles going back and forth and having only 2 countries successful in defending the cup on home soil (Australia and USA).

Now we are less than 100 days away from a second 7ns world cup in San Fransisco

Internationals: All Blacks vs France an old rivalry that always produces highlights and heart break where a hero can easy become a villain is set to kick off. This 3 match thriller will kick start on the 9th of June 2018 at Eden park and the last fixture on the 23rd at the New Zealand fotress Dunedin, It is set to play a huge role in setting the tempo for the world cup.

Football

EPL: Manchester City have been crowned 2018 league champions without even finishing the league even falling victim to a Manchester United riot. Manager Pep Guardiola and his men have shown great character and fortitude with an impressive bounce back.

Arsenal seek new Manager: With what seemed to be a controversial exit manager Arsene Wenger has stepped down after 2 decades of service. The unorthodox manager put Arsenal on the map with the unique style of play which has seen to be their trade mark, the only trigger to this exit is the failure to secure top spot on the EPL which to the dismay of the fans put a chip on the managers shoulder.

NFL

Mock Draftt: The 2018 NFL Draft has nearly arrived, so it’s time to take a look at the latest NFL mock drafts. You can find first-round predictions, the draft’s top players, as well as the order for the 2018 NFL Draft. Many expect Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield to be a high draft pick.

This draft figures to be quarterback-heavy, with potentially four signal callers going in the top 10. Of the non-quarterbacks, Penn State’s Saquon Barkley and Alabama’s Minkah Fitzpatrick could be selected in the top 5.

NFL mock draft 2018: First-round projections, top players

  1. Cleveland Browns: Sam Darnold, QB, USC: The Browns have to use the pick on a quarterback, and we think they’ll choose Darnold.
  2. New York Giants: Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State: Barkley was a star at the NFL combine. If the Giants want to stick with Eli Manning, Barkley will help extend his career.
  3. New York Jets: Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA: The Jets will continue toiling in mediocrity as long as they lack quality quarterback play. Rosen is an excellent consolation prize and seems capable of handling the New York spotlight.
  4. Cleveland Browns (via Houston):Bradley Chubb, DE, N.C. State The Browns selected a quarterback with their first pick. Given that the Jets seem likely to take a quarterback, they can also get a great positional player in Bradley Chubb.
  5. Denver Broncos: Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming: Offensive line could be the pick here. Drafting Allen is a risk, but the Denver quarterback situation might be the worst in the league. Allen did well in the Senior Bowl and followed it up with a strong NFL combine showing, showing why he’s such a tantalizing prospect.
  6. Indianapolis Colts: Quenton Nelson, G, Notre Dame: Even if Andrew Luck doesn’t end up playing again, Indianapolis’ offensive line needs to get better. Nelson is the best offensive line prospect regardless of position.
  7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Derwin James, DB, Florida State: He might not be a better player than Fitzpatrick, but he’s close and he’s a better athlete. Safety seems like the pick for Tampa Bay, if Chubb is on the board.
  8. Chicago Bears: Denzel Ward, CB, Ohio State: The Bears need help at cornerback and wide receiver. With a lot of good but not great wide receivers available, the Bears pick the latest Ohio State star cornerback to come off the assembly line.
  9. San Francisco 49ers: Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, Alabama: It could be either Roquan Smith or Tremaine Edmunds here given the Reuben Foster news, but with Fitzpatrick still on the board, this seems like a big win.
  10. Oakland Raiders: Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia: A defense featuring Khalil Mack shouldn’t be as bad as Oakland’s was in 2017. Smith may be the best off-ball linebacker prospect since Luke Kuechly.
  11. Miami Dolphins: Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma: The Dolphins appear to be enamored with the Oklahoma star, and if he falls to 11, there’s an excellent chance Miami and coach Adam Gase pounce on the Heisman Trophy winner. Buffalo could possibly move up ahead Miami to grab him if Smith is off the board.
  12. Buffalo Bills: Tremaine Edmunds, LB, Virginia Tech: Sean McDermott had two great linebackers when he was the Panthers defensive coordinator. He gets his hands on another one in this Virginia Tech standout.
  13. Washington Redskins: Vita Vea, DT Washington: Washington has its quarterback of the near future with Alex Smith. Secondary could be an option, but Vea fills a big hole in the middle of Washington’s defense.
  14. Green Bay Packers: Marcus Davenport, DE, Texs-San Antonio: Secondary could be an option here but a pass rusher like Marcus Davenport is something Green Bay can’t really pass up.
  15. Arizona Cardinals: Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville: Offensive line could be an option here but if Lamar Jackson is on the board, Arizona seems like the perfect spot to draft the Heisman Trophy winner.
  16. Baltimore Ravens: Connor Williams, G/T: The Ravens have brought in a bunch of wide receivers recently, meaning it can look elsewhere and Williams could be a great guard next to former top pick Ronnie Stanley.
  17. Los Angeles Chargers: Da’Ron Payne, DT, Alabama: The Chargers had the second-worst rush defense in the league last season. Payne will help them improve — look at the way he took over the College Football Playoff. Payne also was excellent at the NFL combine.
  18. Seattle Seahawks: Josh Jackson, CB, Iowa: Corner is suddenly a need for the Seahawks, following the exodus of talent at the position led by Richard Sherman. Derrius Guice could be an option, but cornerback is a more important need for Seattle.
  19. Dallas Cowboys: DJ Moore, WR, SMU: Defensive line could be an option, but wide receiver is also a need for the Cowboys. Moore has climbed throughout the draft process and is the athletic receiver Dallas is looking for.
  20. Detroit Lions: Derrius Guice, RB, LSU: Running back is a big need for the Lions, as they need to take some of the pressure off Matt Stafford. Guice should do just that. Sony Michel also could be an option here.
  21. Cincinnati Bengals: Leighton Vander Esch, LB, Boise State: Offensive line is no longer an issue here for the Bengals with the addition of Glenn. Linebacker is the next biggest need, so look for them to target the athletic Vander Esch, who had a very strong NFL combine.
  22. Buffalo Bills: James Daniels, C, Iowa: Buffalo has lost it’s starting left tackle, left guard and center. Offensive line is a big need, so the Bills will targets the best center prospect in the draft.
  23. New England Patriots: Mike McGlinchey: A front-seven defender could be the move, but with Nate Solder gone, left tackle is a need. The mammoth Notre Dame tackle compares similarly to Solder, making him the perfect pick for the Patriots.
  24. Carolina Panthers: Justin Reid, Stanford, S: Carolina could go pass-rusher or wide receiver here, but the Panthers’ desperately need some youth at safety and Reid was an excellent player for Stanford
  25. Tennessee Titans: Harold Landry, DE, Boston College: The Titans selected a cornerback in the first round last year and could look to continue to improve their secondary. But an outside pass rusher could help improve the defense under new coach Mike Vrabel.
  26. Atlanta Falcons: Taven Bryan, DT, Florida: The Florida prospect is a little raw, but defensive tackle is a big need here for Atlanta.
  27. New Orleans Saints: Hayden Hurst, TE, South Carolina: Coby Fleener has been a little disappointing, so why not get Drew Brees one more target for what will be the final act of his career.
  28. Pittsburgh Steelers: Rashaan Evans, LB, Alabama: With Ryan Shazier’s injury casting doubt on his NFL future, linebacker becomes a position of need. Evans isn’t the prospect that Shazier was, but he, like many other Alabama linebackers, can be very good.
  29. Jacksonville Jaguars: Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama: Jacksonville doesn’t have many needs outside of quarterback. But with a talent like Ridley sliding this far down the board, he’s just a little too good to pass up.
  30. Minnesota Vikings: Isaiah Wynn, G, Georgia: Wynn had a great senior season with Georgia and followed it up with a dominant Senior Bowl. Guard is one of the few areas the Vikings could get better after adding Kirk Cousins in the off-season.
  31. New England Patriots: Maurice Hurst, DT, Michigan: He had some medical concerns at the combine, meaning he could anywhere. But he was one of the top players in the country last year and could be a steal at this point in the draft.
  32. Philadelphia Eagles: Billy Price, G, Ohio State, There aren’t a lot of holes here. Guard is one, given that it was the weakest part of the Eagles’ offensive line.

Zimbabwe Cricket Union Proves To Be April Fools

With the fall of Zimbabwe cricket from the upper echelon to what seemed to be the bottom of the cricket pile. Plagued by years of failures, the Zimbabwe cricket union was between a rock and a hard place as they were looking for a way out and restore pride in the national outfit, after a long and tenuous struggle the weight fell on the shoulders of one Heath Streak as he took up the momentous task and took the reigns of lead coach.

For those who do not know who Heath Streak is, he is one of the Zimbabwean cricket legends who has his name platted in the history books as the only Zimbabwean bowler to take more the 100 test wickets, and 1 of 4 to have more than 100 ODI wickets. Known to be a fierce captain have a heart of a lion who was versatile with both the ball and the bat. He made his Test debut in Zimbabwe’s tour of Pakistan 1993/1994 making his mark by taking 8 wickets in the 2nd Test at Rawalpindi ( 9–14 December 1993). In the match, Streak won the Player of the series award, took 22 wickets at an average of 13.54. He bettered his best bowling figures in 1995 when Pakistan toured Zimbabwe taking 6/90 in the first Test at Harare.

In 2000/2001, he won 2-man of the series awards, first in Zimbabwe’s tour of England and then in Bangladesh’s tour of Zimbabwe. He along with Andy Flower set the record for the highest 7th wicket partnership for Zimbabwe in ODIs(130). He retired from international cricket in October 2005 to become captain of Warwickshire County Cricket Club having previously played county cricket for Hampshire. He also captains his fellow exiled players from Zimbabwe in the Red Lions team, which plays charity games in England. In August 2009, was appointed as the bowling coach of Zimbabwean cricket national team. He was also given the responsibility of working with the young Zimbabwean fast bowlers and for franchise cricket.

Later it also appeared that Heath Streak is the most possible candidate for the head coach job of Zimbabwean national team In 2013, Streak contract was not renewed for financial reasons. Zimbabwe Cricket had offered Streak a consultancy role but they cannot guarantee him a set number of working days or specific pay which has forced him to stay out of the preparations for Bangladesh series. Finances permitting at his franchise in Bulawayo, the Matabeleland Tuskers, he remained coach there. He was appointed Bangladesh’s bowling coach in May 2014 until 2016. In October 2016, he was appointed Head Coach of the Zimbabwe Cricket team. Streak has been tasked with ensuring Zimbabwe qualify for the 2019 World Cup, and will be allowed to continue in his role as bowling coach for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.

Lets digress for a little  and talk about a basic fundamental of sport,  there are 5 principles that one should follow in terms of reviving any sport, and we don’t mean reviving a sport that is facing a season of losses but looking at a team that has had bad run for more than  a decade. The 5 principles focus of 5 aspects 1) Change of management, 2) Change of coach, 3) Change in coaching staff, 4)Identification of players and combinations, 5) intense competition exposure. ZCU seemed to be on the right path of figuring this out but this basic principle seems to have eluded them again as they decided to sacrifice Streak and his staff which includes South African all rounder legend Lance Klusner (who have a wealth of experience put together) in an act of desperation for wins and their reason was that they had failed to deliver results.

One should not forget that cricket in Zimbabwe much like all the sport in the country have fallen victim to poor support. Instead of investing more and being patient they saw the failure to qualify for the world cup as the red flag to ousts the veteran coach, which goes to show the top management have a poor understanding of return on investment especially when it comes to sport. Streak and his staff have pulled a victory over Sri Lanka which was a sign of what the team could achieve with more investment, time and support but no the ZCU paid no attention to this and focused on the losses that Zimbabwe faced and argue that countries like UAE, Ireland etc are not countries which should be worrying over, well spoiler alert they are as they invest a lot more in sport than Zimbabwe has in the past 10 yrs and look at the bigger picture regardless of wins or losses.

Changing a coach and staff on a regular causes more inconsistencies and confusion as different coaches have different work ethics and ideologies meaning as a result the team will be reshuffled on a regular, and all of this equals lack of consistency and poor in fact very poor thinking and organisation on the management from the cricket union, but this goes to all the sports and not just cricket.

Zimbabwe cricket needs Streak and his staff more than ever if they are to even stand a chance to get a fraction close to the power house it used to be,otherwise it will just be another has been that will keep on falling victim to lesser teams at every turn. One can only hope this to be resolved ASAP as we do not need to be playing politics rather let Streak get back to work.

Sport 360 : Fighters and Connectors

There is no denying that sport has the ability to bring separated worlds together, smiles in times of tragedy and friendships in the most unconventional way. One can consider it as Gods gift to mankind that shows that there is more to life than we think, and the simple pleasures have a way of lightening the spirits.

In Dubai there is an none profit organization that spearheads a programme for children with disabilities and involve them in all activities that society may not think them capable of, to give them and the rest of the community opportunity for inclusion and integration. Team Angel Wolf is a run by Nick Watson and his wife who have two children Tia and the pilot/rock star who is the motivation for the programme their 14 year old son Rio.

Rio who has been a icon was diagnosed with 1Q44 Deletion De Novo and as a result he has challenges with talking and walking as well as has seizures. With the knowledge of this ne could think that the parents would shut the world to their son but on the contrary, Rio and his family have been companions on fitness challenges from triathlons to marathons you name it Rio has most probably done it.

This is a true never let the world dictate your future, I witnessed this first hand and I can say without a shadow of doubt we need more Angel Wolves in this world. The latest activity is where they incorporate other children with disabilities and volunteer teens ages to participate in beach activities from swimming to a beach runs and it is all smiles all through out as they build everlasting connections.

From The Millennial Pulse we say to Team Angel Wolf keep the spirit and heart you are changing the world one smile at a time and giving hope to other parents that disability is just a word and children can achieve anything any how if they receive the motivation and support.

And to Rio you have the heart of a tiger, keep on fighting, enjoying every minute and spread that smile all over. Salute to the real rock star of sport and fitness.

Whose line is it anyway?

In a industry that had been dominated by men and shunned women from taking part for decades on end since time immemorial. From 776 BC in Greece it saw the birth of sport on a huge scale and it was such a male chauvanistic period that the only place women where to be seen would be the grandstands cheering on their counter parts, with dreams of one day being part of the revolution that would see women be part of the grand stage.

It would be no later than 1900 Olympic Games in Paris which would see 22 women for the first time compete in 5 events (tennis, sailing, croquet, golf and equestrian) on a grand stage and this would go on to open doors for women to prove that they too can provide equally thrilling contests and competition. Over the years post transformation, women in sport have made leaps and strides both on and off the field, keeping the dream alive of a future for the young girls. There is no denying that because of the inclusion of women what started out as entertainment for the elite has turned into a global phenomenon.

This month we dedicate all future posts to the celebration of women in sport and from all walks of life, shapes and sizes, to the trend setters and record breakers, the movers and the shakers, pros and rookies. Happy Women’s Month we love and appreciate all the women who are setting out to prove to the word that women too can own the line.

Keep doing what you doing, and as Denzel Washington would say ‘ see you at work’.

Game – Set – Dubai

The Dubai Duty Free Tennis championships is the biggest Middle Eastern season opener court battle where the stars  and supporters of all ages come out to play. It has become the ideal proving ground for the rising stars and a rich hunting ground for the top seeded players as they prep up for the major title races in the season. Children who religiously follow the stars and the sport get a chance to attend coaching clinic as they prepare to see their icons in action

2017 saw the names like Andy Murray gracing the courts and claiming the title for the men’s singles, with the doubles title going to Jean Julean and Hona Tecan. 2018 would not see the return of the great one to defend his title, and it would be open season for the title with the biggest name in the chase being Grigor Dimitrovo ranked 5th in the world. As the action is set to kick off on the 1st to 3rd of March. Already the pressure has gone high and expectations are on the rise, question I who will have their name stamped on the 2018 season opener in Dubai?

However on the other side of the spectrum the women’s title has already been successfully defended by 2017 winner Elina Svitlova, who put up an impressive display of skill, grit and determination. Ranked 3rd in the world the Ukrainian has begun her season on a high and stamping her name on the upcoming title chases in the season. 2018 also saw the crowning of new doubles champions Chan Hao-Ching & Yang Zhaoxuan.

As we head towards the end of the tournament with a day left for the men’s trophy to be clamed, one can say it has been a show piece thus far providing none stop action which mother natures faithful can attest to.

Bloopers, Skills, Tries, Tackles and Heartbreak in New Zealand

From the moment the series leg landed in New Zealand it was nothing short of heart to mouth electrifying atmosphere both on and off the pitch. With all the top seeded teams having a point to prove, round one matches set the crowd up for prolific series. With Australia so far being the only team to secure a series leg win on home soil the momentum was swinging in their favor, South Africa and New Zealand where looking for a second series win which would put either team ahead in the log standings, Argentina and Fiji setting their eyes for their first win which would put their campaign on track.

The All Black outfit with a massive home advantage put an unprecedented display winning all their pool matches and almost suffering a defeat  from the Argentinian side who eventually gifted them a get out jail gift card in dramatic fashion. All the top sides showed their  intent on taking the series the leg, however the day belonged to the Fijian troops, showing great skill, determination and sheer will power pulled upsets over Australia, New Zealand and South Africa who they met in the final to secure their first win as they head to Las Vegas.

ML20180204052

With 4 series legs played in 4 different countries with 4 different winners one can only wonder what will happen next as the tide turn to USA for the half mark of the series race. Will South Africa finally get a double after a chain of near misses, will Australia steal it on American soil, will Fiji manage back to back wins, will New Zealand get a back their second wind as they set to close the gap on the standings or will the Americans do the unthinkable and also manage a successful home front defense and make sure what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.
